Affinergy Secures Exclusive Worldwide License to Duke University's Interfacial Biomaterials Patent and Proprietary Coating Materials
Platform coatings technology to be commercialized in wide range of industries, including medical devices, filtration, diagnostics, and biosensors.
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., February 24, 2004 - Affinergy, Inc., a biomaterial coatings company with unique capabilities to regulate biological processes on the surface of synthetic materials, announced today that it has signed an exclusive worldwide license for the "Interfacial Biomaterials" coatings technology developed at Duke University. The license agreement includes patent applications and coating materials that have already been developed.
"We are thrilled to complete the licensing process with Duke University and formally launch our commercial operations," said Peyton Anderson, CEO of Affinergy. "We are concentrating on improving existing medical devices, as well as enabling the creation of various new products. We have begun engaging prospective partners about applying the technology to their specific product needs. Affinergy has an active commercialization plan for 2004, including pre-clinical studies, development collaborations, and licensing deals."
"We're pleased Affinergy will accelerate the commercialization of this novel technology," said Dr. Robert L. Taber, vice chancellor of the Duke Medical Center. "With its new laboratory facilities in the Becton Dickinson Technologies incubator, Affinergy appears ready to develop the Interfacial Biomaterials technology quickly. We believe these coatings have the potential to improve the quality of health care across many different fields."
"Duke University provided an interdisciplinary environment where we could discover and develop this technology," said Affinergy's co-founder Daniel J. Kenan MD, Ph.D., of Duke University Medical Center. "We are grateful for the critical support of our scientific peers and the professionals in the Duke University Office of Science and Technology. Our goal is to introduce this technology into various markets rapidly, which Affinergy intends to do through a diverse set of partnering opportunities."
About Affinergy
Affinergy's revolutionary "biological glue" is a platform technology that greatly improves the performance of medical devices by regulating the biology on their surfaces by targeting applications to block biofilm formation, promote specific cell growth, and enable biomolecular immobilization. The coatings technology is highly modular, target-specific, and easy to apply in manufacturing. Affinergy can help medical device suppliers grow sales by differentiating existing devices as well as creating new products. By creating "tunable" bioactive surfaces on medical devices, Affinergy can contribute to the lowering of healthcare costs and improving of patient outcomes.
